The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy

A dazzling, richly moving new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The God of Small Things

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness takes us on an intimate journey of many years across the Indian subcontinent—from the cramped neighborhoods of Old Delhi and the roads of the new city to the mountains and valleys of Kashmir and beyond, where war is peace and peace is war.

It is an aching love story and a decisive remonstration, a story told in a whisper, in a shout, through unsentimental tears and sometimes with a bitter laugh. Each of its characters is indelibly, tenderly rendered. Its heroes are people who have been broken by the world they live in and then rescued, patched together by acts of love—and by hope.

As this ravishing, deeply humane novel braids these lives together, it reinvents what a novel can do and can be. The Ministry of Utmost Happiness demonstrates on every page the miracle of Arundhati Roy’s storytelling gifts.

Guise Maggi Exhibition

Artist Giuse Maggi will present her latest collection of sustainable art including functional objects and wall hangings inspired by the rich heritage of the Arab tradition and the colors of the Bahraini landscape.

Born and raised in Italy, Giuse Maggi is a multidisciplinary artist who loves to explore materials and their potentiality with antique and new techniques.

Giuse has been working with glass for two decades until a few years ago she discovered the world of recycling and sustainable art; since then she has been combining plastic, metals and fibers with her beloved glass, experimenting weaving and basketry techniques.

Her process involves an intense labor: she builds objects that have been generated by the accumulation of countless small acts. Through repetition and endless variations, her inner thoughts unfold into an emerging form.

Her paintings, rugs, baskets and sculptures are a challenge and represent an intimate desire of beauty in everything is discarded and neglected by humanity.

“Making” becomes a spiritual process, a ritual that links her soul to objects.

Giuse Maggi has exhibited her work in many solo and group exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Italy. She currently lives in the Kingdom of Bahrain working as a fulltime artist.

TinyOm Jewellery Launch

Join us for the launch of TinyOm's stunning new collection Waves, inspired by designer Virginie Dreyer's travels in Japan.

Virginie describes being 'seduced' by the ancient yet contemporary art of woodblock printing employed by Japanese artists to create visually stunning and deeply significant masterpieces.

In particular I was fascinated by Hokusai’s waves and paintings of the ocean, and by the modern seamless wave patterns in interiors and textiles.  A wave can flow around obstacles in its path, and yet it possesses the strength and ability to change and affect all that it touches. Its power to adapt embodies the flow of life.

The crashing of the waves on the shore, the deepness of the vast ocean, each drop of water becoming one of it. And again It came to me, the meaning of oneness, the unity, the 'one'.  -

An Art Exhibition with Nasim Javid

Opening Night - Sunday, May 21st: 7pm to 9pm
Monday, May 22nd to Wednesday, May 24th: 10am to 6pm

Nasim Javid was introduced to traditional forms of arts from a very young age and as a child growing up in Iran she began taking courses in Islamic Arts and Miniatures. Although the restrictions and rigidness of the Islamic Art’s style were tremendously challenging for a young artist, these trainings deeply impacted her future artworks when she ventured back to her roots.

Her travels as a young adult in various countries enabled her to enrich her art knowledge  and she developed an interest in mixed-media.  She began to push her boundaries by experimenting with various mediums and techniques combined with her knowledge of Islamic art. By delving into the details of Islamic art, she understood the philosophy and the complexity that lies behind, where each color and line was deliberately employed to present harmony and unity and referred to a superior source.

In her recent artworks, she uses a more simplified version of Arabesque patterns, traditional motives and miniatures to give more freedom and energy to her work. This has enabled her to display the magnificence of Islamic art with a more contemporary approach.

Kids BookClub (for 10-13 year olds)

'Awkward' by Svetlana Chmakova

Cardinal rule #1 for surviving school: Don't get noticed by the mean kids.

Cardinal rule #2 for surviving school: Seek out groups with similar interests and join them.

On her first day at her new school, Penelope--Peppi--Torres reminds herself of these basics. But when she trips into a quiet boy in the hall, Jaime Thompson, she's already broken the first rule, and the mean kids start calling her the "nerder girlfriend." How does she handle this crisis? By shoving poor Jaime and running away!

Falling back on rule two and surrounding herself with new friends in the art club, Peppi still can't help feeling ashamed about the way she treated Jaime. Things are already awkward enough between the two, but to make matters worse, he's a member of her own club's archrivals--the science club! And when the two clubs go to war, Peppi realizes that sometimes you have to break the rules to survive middle school!

The Gracekeepers by Kirsty Logan

As a Gracekeeper, Callanish administers shoreside burials, laying the dead to their final resting place deep in the depths of the ocean. Alone on her island, she has exiled herself to a life of tending watery graves as penance for a long-ago mistake that still haunts her. Meanwhile, North works as a circus performer with the Excalibur, a floating troupe of acrobats, clowns, dancers, and trainers who sail from one archipelago to the next, entertaining in exchange for sustenance.

Inspired in part by Scottish myths and fairytales, The Gracekeepers tells a modern story of an irreparably changed world: one that harbors the same isolation and sadness, but also joys and marvels of our own age.

True Cost Screening & Clothing Swap

Join us for the first Fashion Revolution event in Bahrain!

Fashion Revolution is a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability and ethics in the fashion industry.

The Bahrain chapter of Fashion Revolution aims to unite the fashion industry and ignite a revolution to radically change the way our clothes are sourced, produced and purchased, so that what the world wears has been made in a safe, clean and fair way.

'We believe in an industry that values people, the environment, creativity and profit in equal measure. Our mission is to bring everyone together to make that happen.'

Fashion Revolution Week's #whomademyclothes campaign coincides with the anniversary of the horrific Rana Plaza factory collapse in which 1,138 people were killed and many more injured on 24th April 2013.

'We use this week to encourage millions of people to ask brands ‘Who made my clothes’ and demand greater transparency in the fashion supply chain.

Come with an open mind, a piece of clothing you are willing to swap, and the “story” behind that piece of clothing written down on a small piece of paper.

The story can be as simple as a favorite memory in that item, who bought you the item, how you came across it, etc. The idea is that the garment has value and should be cared for as such by its next owner.

We look forward to seeing you, hearing the story behind your garment, and having a short discussion on the True Cost and Fashion Revolution after the screening.'

Get ready to think about #WhoMadeMyClothes.

Specialising in blending the traditional with the modern, Yalla Habibi produces stunning art objects for the home made by traditional local craftsmen.

In the latest collection of embroidered art cushions, Yalla Habibi continues working with artists like Ahmed Anan, Mohamed Sharkawy and Jenine Sharabi, while welcoming new contributions from Perry Elashmawi and Ali Al Mahmeed. The fabric used in framing this art is designed and hand woven in Bani Jamrah, cradle of Bahrain’s textile traditions.

Nathaly, founder of Yalla Habibi, has also started working with the skilled craftsmen of Syria, who have used her original designs to produce a collection of exquisitely ornate wall hangings, wooden boxes and trays, all decorated in mother of pearl, ceramic or silver.

The History of Yoga I - A talk by Eva Burns

History of Yoga I

Curious about where Yoga began? This talk will investigate Yoga’s roots within India’s early spiritual and philosophical history. Starting in the Indus Valley before 2000 BCE, we will discover archaeological evidence of a proto-yoga. From there, Yoga’s origins within the rishis’ Vedic texts, the Buddha’s teachings and the Jain traditions will be traced up through the Classical period when the polymath, Patañjali, composed The Yoga Sūtras.
