The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East by Sandy Tolan

Tolan sensitively describes the tough friendship between Dalia Eshkenazi Landau, the daughter of Romanian Jewish immigrants who settled in Ramla, and Palestinian Bashir Khairi, who in 1967 knocked on her door to look at the house his family lost when it was forced to flee in 1948 . . . Tolan uses the beloved backyard lemon tree to drive home the shared humanity of the successive inhabitants of one home.

The Man Who Created The Middle East by Christopher Simon Sykes

At the age of only 36, Sir Mark Sykes was signatory to the Sykes-Picot agreement, one of the most reviled treaties of modern times. A century later, Christopher Sykes’ lively biography of his grandfather reassesses his life and work, and the political instability and violence in the Middle East attributed to it.

Sykes reveals new facets of a misremembered diplomatic giant. Using previously undisclosed family letters and cartoons by his grandfather, he delivers a comprehensive and humbling account of the man behind one of the most impactful policies in the Middle East.

Monday Night Bookclub - A Separation

Named a best book of the year by the New York Times, NPR, Huffington PostThe A.V. Club, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Guardian, Refinery29, Town & Country, Harper’s Bazaar, NYLON, BookRiot.

A young woman has agreed with her faithless husband: it’s time for them to separate. For the moment it’s a private matter, a secret between the two of them. As she begins her new life, she gets word that Christopher has gone missing in a remote region in the rugged south of Greece; she reluctantly agrees to go look for him, still keeping their split to herself. In her heart, she’s not even sure if she wants to find him. As her search comes to a shocking breaking point, she discovers she understands less than she thought she did about her relationship and the man she used to love.

A searing, suspenseful story of intimacy and infidelity, A Separation lays bare what divides us from the inner lives of others. With exquisitely cool precision, Katie Kitamura propels us into the experience of a woman on edge, with a fiercely mesmerizing story to tell.

Monday Night Book Club - The Mother Tongue, The Story of the English Language by Bill Bryson

Only Bill Bryson could make a book about the English language so entertaining. With his boundless enthusiasm and restless eye for the absurd, this is his astonishing tour of English. From its mongrel origins to its status as the world's most-spoken tongue; its apparent simplicity to its deceptive complexity; its vibrant swearing to its uncertain spelling and pronunciation, Bryson covers all this as well as the many curious eccentricities that make it as maddening to learn as it is flexible to use.

Bill Bryson's classic Mother Tongue is a highly readable and hilarious tale of how English came to be the world's language.

Japanese Soul Cooking: Ramen, Tonkatsu, Tempura, and More from the Streets and Kitchens of Tokyo and Beyond  by Tadashi Ono

In Japanese Soul Cooking, Tadashi Ono and Harris Salat introduce you to this irresistible, homey style of cooking. As you explore the range of exciting, satisfying fare, you may recognize some familiar favorites, including ramen, soba, udon, and tempura. Other, lesser known Japanese classics, such as wafu pasta (spaghetti with bold, fragrant toppings like miso meat sauce), tatsuta-age (fried chicken marinated in garlic, ginger, and other Japanese seasonings), and savory omelets with crabmeat and shiitake mushrooms will instantly become standards in your kitchen.

Ono and Salat’s fascinating exploration of the surprising origins and global influences behind popular dishes is accompanied by rich location photography that captures the energy and essence of this food in everyday life, bringing beloved Japanese comfort food to Western home cooks for the first time.

100 Bahrain Stories Book Signing

100 Bahrain stories is an independent project which began on social media in January 2016. The ethos of this project is to share the narratives and portraits of 100 individuals who contribute to the rich fabric of life in Bahrain. The aim is also to show that no matter who we are or what we do, we each have our own story and our humanity is shared.

About the author
Born and raised in Australia, Tanzeel Jabbar-Khadir landed in Manama from Melbourne for the first time in 2008. Back then she was so preoccupied with work and her young family that she didn’t take time to explore the Island. She returned to Australia a couple of years later regretting the fact that she hadn’t. Fast forward to 2015, when she and her family found themselves relocating to Bahrain once again. Aware of how lucky she was to have this second chance, this time she promised herself that she would explore the Island as much as she could - and that is what she did.

Plated Heirlooms  by Dima Al Sharif

Palestinian cuisine is the compiled story of this sesame-sized country’s huge history, diverse
geography and varied social groups and lifestyles. Most importantly, this cuisine is the story of the passage of time and the changes that took place throughout history. Cuisines are always reflective of all aspects of a people’s lives so Falasteen, like all countries, had plated a cuisine that can be fragmented and divided into sections and categories, however never fully understood nor completely savoured until viewed as a whole. This is that story.

Plated Heirlooms, pours from the belief that while all food is dictated by geography, it is culture that creates and shapes the many varieties that a cuisine plates. As such, Plated Heirlooms is an intriguing blend of cultural history, family stories and Palestinian cuisine recipes.
