100 Bahrain Stories Book Signing

100 Bahrain stories is an independent project which began on social media in January 2016. The ethos of this project is to share the narratives and portraits of 100 individuals who contribute to the rich fabric of life in Bahrain. The aim is also to show that no matter who we are or what we do, we each have our own story and our humanity is shared.

About the author
Born and raised in Australia, Tanzeel Jabbar-Khadir landed in Manama from Melbourne for the first time in 2008. Back then she was so preoccupied with work and her young family that she didn’t take time to explore the Island. She returned to Australia a couple of years later regretting the fact that she hadn’t. Fast forward to 2015, when she and her family found themselves relocating to Bahrain once again. Aware of how lucky she was to have this second chance, this time she promised herself that she would explore the Island as much as she could - and that is what she did.

There are no limits as to the potential growth that you can achieve. Once you realise that
your level of consciousness is directly related to your actions, you can move from

iPEC.

Rated by Forbes Magazine as a Top Ten assessment to help individuals understand why they respond or react the way they do,  the Energy Leadership Index (ELI) is an attitudinal assessment created by Bruce D Schneider.

Core Energy coach and Master Practitioner Sofia Jafar will shed light  on the specific filters we develop over our lifetime, how these filters influence all our decisions in life, career and business and how the ELI can help.

Because attitude is subjective, it can be altered. The ELI is a tool that opens the door of awareness for us to identify what is not working and accordingly adjust our attitude, engaged energy and subsequent actions from a suppressive space to a inspiring building space.

Plated Heirlooms  by Dima Al Sharif

Palestinian cuisine is the compiled story of this sesame-sized country’s huge history, diverse
geography and varied social groups and lifestyles. Most importantly, this cuisine is the story of the passage of time and the changes that took place throughout history. Cuisines are always reflective of all aspects of a people’s lives so Falasteen, like all countries, had plated a cuisine that can be fragmented and divided into sections and categories, however never fully understood nor completely savoured until viewed as a whole. This is that story.

Plated Heirlooms, pours from the belief that while all food is dictated by geography, it is culture that creates and shapes the many varieties that a cuisine plates. As such, Plated Heirlooms is an intriguing blend of cultural history, family stories and Palestinian cuisine recipes.

2, 6, 7, 11 Red Heaven - an Art Exhibition with Eskander Dewani

Wednesday, April 4th: 7pm to 9pm
Thursday, April 5th to Saturday, April 7th:10am to 6pm

Navigating through different facets and forms of art - painting, illustration and poetry - Eskander continues to discover and evolve within all these realms of expression and creativity.  His contemporary portraits are at once arrestingly lifelike and gothically evocative, conveying a sense of immediacy in each piece, as they draw you into the canvas.  The red background swallows all the surrounding and takes you to the very centre of the moody, weathered expressions worn by these women.  They invoke a gut reaction, which differs from each perspective.

There is an undeniable strength in the women Eskander conceives, as well as a deep rooted sense of respect, courage, empathy and natural beauty.

Eskander cites the work of Gustav Klimt, Francesco Clemente and Lucian Freud as influences on his work as well as the love of music that varies from day to day.

Japanese Soul Cooking: Ramen, Tonkatsu, Tempura, and More from the Streets and Kitchens of Tokyo and Beyond  by Tadashi Ono

Move over, sushi. It’s time for gyoza, curry, tonkatsu, and furai. These icons of Japanese comfort food cooking are the hearty, flavor-packed, craveable dishes you’ll find in every kitchen and street corner hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Japan.

In Japanese Soul Cooking, Tadashi Ono and Harris Salat introduce you to this irresistible, homey style of cooking. As you explore the range of exciting, satisfying fare, you may recognize some familiar favorites, including ramen, soba, udon, and tempura. Other, lesser known Japanese classics, such as wafu pasta (spaghetti with bold, fragrant toppings like miso meat sauce), tatsuta-age (fried chicken marinated in garlic, ginger, and other Japanese seasonings), and savory omelets with crabmeat and shiitake mushrooms will instantly become standards in your kitchen as well. With foolproof instructions and step-by-step photographs, you’ll soon be knocking out chahan fried rice, mentaiko spaghetti, saikoro steak, and more for friends and family.

Ono and Salat’s fascinating exploration of the surprising origins and global influences behind popular dishes is accompanied by rich location photography that captures the energy and essence of this food in everyday life, bringing beloved Japanese comfort food to Western home cooks for the first time.

The Professor and the Madman: A Tale of Murder, Insanity, and the Making of the Oxford English Dictionary by Simon Winchester

The Professor and the Madman, masterfully researched and eloquently written, is an extraordinary tale of madness, genius, and the incredible obsessions of two remarkable men that led to the making of the Oxford English Dictionary -- and literary history. The compilation of the OED began in 1857, it was one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken. As definitions were collected, the overseeing committee, led by Professor James Murray, discovered that one man, Dr. W. C. Minor, had submitted more than ten thousand. When the committee insisted on honoring him, a shocking truth came to light: Dr. Minor, an American Civil War veteran, was also an inmate at an asylum for the criminally insane.

The Geography of Bliss by Eric  Weiner

Foreign journalist Eric Weiner, tired of bearing so much bad news for National Public Radio, visits 10 nations around the world to learn what makes their citizens happy. He's an appealing narrator--clear voiced and good natured--and he can tell a good story. The understated chumminess in his voice is a perfect vehicle for his wry observations, well-disguised self-deprecation, and ultra-smooth writing skills. Weiner's stories and observations warm the heart but also deliver a satisfying supply of his abundant wit, big-city perspective, and generous appreciation of the human condition. More literary than scientific and free from any pretense of inspiration, this production offers time well spent with a nuanced thinker and a relaxing account of the large and small experiences that make people everywhere so interesting. - AudioFile

Crossroads  by Tal Ronnen

Reinventing plant-based eating is what Tal Ronnen is all about. At his Los Angeles restaurant, Crossroads, the menu is vegan, but there are no soybeans or bland seitan to be found. He and his executive chef, Scot Jones, turn seasonal vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains into sophisticated Mediterranean fare—think warm bowls of tomato-sauced pappardelle, plates of spicy carrot salad, and crunchy flatbreads piled high with roasted vegetables. In Crossroads, an IACP Cookbook Award finalist, Ronnen teaches readers to make his recipes and proves that the flavors we crave are easily replicated in dishes made without animal products. With accessible, unfussy recipes, Crossroads takes plant-based eating firmly out of the realm of hippie health food and into a cuisine that fits perfectly with today’s modern palate. The recipes are photographed in sumptuous detail, and with more than 100 of them for weeknight dinners, snacks and appetizers, special occasion meals, desserts, and more, this book is an indispensable resource for healthy, mindful eaters everywhere.
