The Feminine Mystique
by Betty Friedan

Landmark, groundbreaking, classic—these adjectives barely do justice to the pioneering vision and lasting impact of The Feminine Mystique. Published in 1963, it gave a pitch-perfect description of “the problem that has no name”: the insidious beliefs and institutions that undermined women’s confidence in their intellectual capabilities and kept them in the home. Writing in a time when the average woman first married in her teens and 60 percent of women students dropped out of college to marry, Betty Friedan captured the frustrations and thwarted ambitions of a generation and showed women how they could reclaim their lives. Part social chronicle, part manifesto, The Feminine Mystique is filled with fascinating anecdotes and interviews as well as insights that continue to inspire.shank with vegetable briam.

Watercolor Art Exhibition by Meriel Cooper
Opening Wednesday, 13th March : 6pm to 9pm
Exhibition runs from Thursday, 14th March to Saturday, 16th March: 10am to 6pm.

“I feel there is quite enough misery in the world so the overall aim of my work is to bring joy into my client’s lives.  Few things give me more pleasure than when someone emails me from a foreign land and tells me that a commissioned or purchased piece has given them pleasure for years.  What greater reward.”

Meriel uses watercolor and mixed media to paint large, rich and colorful images of Bahrain, still lifes, flowers and other natural shapes.

Born in England, Meriel grew up on the foothills of Mount Kenya and later lived in North Africa, America and Bermuda.  She has been living in Bahrain since 2005.

Her work can be found in private collections in the US, the UK, Bermuda, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Bahrain.  In January 2014 she was honored by being selected for the 40th Fine Arts Exhibition in Bahrain.

Mazi
by Christina Mouratoglou

The collection of recipes in the book doesn’t feature one single region but the whole country, from the Aegean Islands to the Peloponnese and Northern Greece. You will discover the different influences form geographic neighbours or historic events, most notably the 400 year rule of the Ottoman Empires and the Venetian possession of the Ionian islands, as well as the religious observances and festivals. Recipes travel from Christmas melomakarona to the traditional Easter bread, tsoureki, from homely artichokes a la polita to savoy cabbage dolmades and signature dishes fit for Sunday lunches like the slow-cooked lamb shank with vegetable briam.

The rules of our CookBook Club are simple. Look through the book, pick a recipe to prepare, and bring the finished dish to our meeting where we will all indulge in a glorious feast!

Monday, 11th March: 10am

Join us for a talk on Ayurveda with Lina Zalloum.  Ayurveda, the science of life and self healing, is based on the idea that harmony and health, and disharmony and dis-ease, are connected.

Ayurvedic practitioners seek to get to the root cause of disease, resolve it by eliminating the original cause, and then provide their patients with all the tools to keep their body in a balanced state.  They seeks to understand an individual’s unique constitution as not one approach is appropriate for all.  Lifestyle and diet adjustments are paramount in creating a balance that will continue to nurture and support us for the entirety of our lives.

The Wound is Where the Light Enters- Rumi
An Exhibition of Mystical Tattoo Designs by Karima Sharabi

Saturday, 2nd March to Wednesday, 6th March: 10am to 6pm

Karima’s journey with Arabic lettering began when a friend in Peru asked her to create a tattoo with his daughter’s name in Arabic. As she considered various designs, she began to see how the Arabic letters could be molded and shaped into recognizable forms. The movement of the letters could capture the sentiment of the word and express the profundity of the Arabic language.

The immediate response from the public after posting images of her work on Instagram was unprecedented. She had followers from all over the world requesting tattoo designs, some simple and others multifaceted; receiving the most interesting and moving stories with numerous requests; stories of struggle and overcoming obstacles, lost love and sickness. In a sense, Karima’s calligrams became a totem to each of its owners - a mark of an important life change and permanent reminder of their strengths and virtues and of seeing ‘the light’.

The pieces presented in this exhibition, The wound is where the light enters are Arabic calligrams inspired by the works of eastern spiritualists like Hafiz, Rumi, and Khalil Gibran as well as Native American leaders who understood the sanctity of nature and their surroundings.  These calligrams combine the beauty of Arabic lettering, which is most often associated with Islamic design, with other religious and cultural symbols.

Killers of the Flower Moon
by David Grann

From New York Times best-selling author of The Lost City of Z, a twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history

In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off.  As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery.

The Lemon Tree: An Arab, a Jew, and the Heart of the Middle East by Sandy Tolan

Tolan sensitively describes the tough friendship between Dalia Eshkenazi Landau, the daughter of Romanian Jewish immigrants who settled in Ramla, and Palestinian Bashir Khairi, who in 1967 knocked on her door to look at the house his family lost when it was forced to flee in 1948 . . . Tolan uses the beloved backyard lemon tree to drive home the shared humanity of the successive inhabitants of one home.

The Man Who Created The Middle East by Christopher Simon Sykes

At the age of only 36, Sir Mark Sykes was signatory to the Sykes-Picot agreement, one of the most reviled treaties of modern times. A century later, Christopher Sykes’ lively biography of his grandfather reassesses his life and work, and the political instability and violence in the Middle East attributed to it.

Sykes reveals new facets of a misremembered diplomatic giant. Using previously undisclosed family letters and cartoons by his grandfather, he delivers a comprehensive and humbling account of the man behind one of the most impactful policies in the Middle East.
