Crossroads  by Tal Ronnen

Reinventing plant-based eating is what Tal Ronnen is all about. At his Los Angeles restaurant, Crossroads, the menu is vegan, but there are no soybeans or bland seitan to be found. He and his executive chef, Scot Jones, turn seasonal vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains into sophisticated Mediterranean fare—think warm bowls of tomato-sauced pappardelle, plates of spicy carrot salad, and crunchy flatbreads piled high with roasted vegetables. In Crossroads, an IACP Cookbook Award finalist, Ronnen teaches readers to make his recipes and proves that the flavors we crave are easily replicated in dishes made without animal products. With accessible, unfussy recipes, Crossroads takes plant-based eating firmly out of the realm of hippie health food and into a cuisine that fits perfectly with today’s modern palate. The recipes are photographed in sumptuous detail, and with more than 100 of them for weeknight dinners, snacks and appetizers, special occasion meals, desserts, and more, this book is an indispensable resource for healthy, mindful eaters everywhere.

The rules of our CookBook Club are simple. Look through the book, pick a recipe to prepare, and bring the finished dish to our meeting where we will all indulge in a delicious feast!

Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa
and
Sharon and My Mother-in-Law: Ramallah Diaries by Suad Amiry

Mornings in Jenin is a multi-generational story about a Palestinian family. Forcibly removed from the olive-farming village of Ein Hod by the newly formed state of Israel in 1948, the Abulhejos are displaced to live in canvas tents in the Jenin refugee camp. We follow the Abulhejo family as they live through a half century of violent history. Amidst the loss and fear, hatred and pain, as their tents are replaced by more forebodingly permanent cinderblock huts, there is always the waiting, waiting to return to a lost home.

Set against one of the twentieth century's most intractable political conflicts, Mornings in Jenin is a deeply human novel - a novel of history, identity, friendship, love, terrorism, surrender, courage, and hope. Its power forces us to take a fresh look at one of the defining conflicts of our lifetimes.

Sharon and My Mother-in-Law: Ramallah Diaries: Based on diaries and email correspondence that she kept from 1981-2004, here Suad Amiry evokes daily life in the West Bank town of Ramallah. Capturing the frustrations, cabin fever, and downright misery of her experiences, Amiry writes with elegance and humor about the enormous difficulty of moving from one place to another, the torture of falling in love with someone from another town, the absurdity of her dog receiving a Jerusalem identity card when thousands of Palestinians could not, and the trials of having her ninety-two-year-old mother-in-law living in her house during a forty-two-day curfew. With a wickedly sharp ear for dialogue and a keen eye for detail, Amiry gives us an original, ironic, and firsthand glimpse into the absurdity—and agony—of life in the Occupied Territories.

Guise Maggi Exhibition

Artist Giuse Maggi will present her latest collection of sustainable art including functional objects and wall hangings inspired by the rich heritage of the Arab tradition and the colors of the Bahraini landscape.

Born and raised in Italy, Giuse Maggi is a multidisciplinary artist who loves to explore materials and their potentiality with antique and new techniques.

Giuse has been working with glass for two decades until a few years ago she discovered the world of recycling and sustainable art; since then she has been combining plastic, metals and fibers with her beloved glass, experimenting weaving and basketry techniques.

Her process involves an intense labor: she builds objects that have been generated by the accumulation of countless small acts. Through repetition and endless variations, her inner thoughts unfold into an emerging form.

Her paintings, rugs, baskets and sculptures are a challenge and represent an intimate desire of beauty in everything is discarded and neglected by humanity.

“Making” becomes a spiritual process, a ritual that links her soul to objects.

Giuse Maggi has exhibited her work in many solo and group exhibitions in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Italy. She currently lives in the Kingdom of Bahrain working as a fulltime artist.

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy

A dazzling, richly moving new novel by the internationally celebrated author of The God of Small Things

The Ministry of Utmost Happiness takes us on an intimate journey of many years across the Indian subcontinent—from the cramped neighborhoods of Old Delhi and the roads of the new city to the mountains and valleys of Kashmir and beyond, where war is peace and peace is war.

It is an aching love story and a decisive remonstration, a story told in a whisper, in a shout, through unsentimental tears and sometimes with a bitter laugh. Each of its characters is indelibly, tenderly rendered. Its heroes are people who have been broken by the world they live in and then rescued, patched together by acts of love—and by hope.

As this ravishing, deeply humane novel braids these lives together, it reinvents what a novel can do and can be. The Ministry of Utmost Happiness demonstrates on every page the miracle of Arundhati Roy’s storytelling gifts.

TinyOm Jewellery Launch

Join us for the launch of TinyOm's stunning new collection Waves, inspired by designer Virginie Dreyer's travels in Japan.

Virginie describes being 'seduced' by the ancient yet contemporary art of woodblock printing employed by Japanese artists to create visually stunning and deeply significant masterpieces.

In particular I was fascinated by Hokusai’s waves and paintings of the ocean, and by the modern seamless wave patterns in interiors and textiles.  A wave can flow around obstacles in its path, and yet it possesses the strength and ability to change and affect all that it touches. Its power to adapt embodies the flow of life.

The crashing of the waves on the shore, the deepness of the vast ocean, each drop of water becoming one of it. And again It came to me, the meaning of oneness, the unity, the 'one'.  -

Join us for the launch of Swayta Sha's collection of vibrant semi-precious jewels and unique sparkling diamonds designed by Swayta Toolsidass.

Swayta's love of jewellery started at a young age as she watched members of her own family create fine pieces. Her great grandfather was a jeweller to the Nizam of Hyderabad, India, in 1890 and his jewellery sold across the globe. With the pedigree of this knowledge she has launched her own brand Swayta Sha.
